Not in a high trilling voice? You were always a bit angry you didn’t end up being a choir boy.
No, no, no.
That’s really what’s driven you on.
I would like to have done that.
It’s good you’ve admitted that. Shall we just take a break? I need a pee.

ASH ON AN OLD MAN’S SLEEVE
I won’t reach over the recording machine because I’ll put ash on it . . . and as T.S. Eliot said, ‘Ash on an old man’s sleeve / Is all the ash the burnt roses leave.’ So, shall I turn that radio off? It’ll be in the way.
Yeah, yeah, probably. What were we talking about during the break? I’ve completely forgotten. I think we were talking about the book.
What were you saying about the book?
We were saying that it’s quite difficult, in a way. We’ve talked about it before. Doing something together. We both always had qualms about it for some reason.
What’s that?
Doing another book, a follow-up to Angel Gear, which is what this is, I suppose.
Well, I’ve known you long enough, Colin, to love you dearly and trust you. And, ah . . . and I say this sincerely . . . we’re all grafters round here. But, you know, we’ve worked out this thing and, thirty years later it’s . . .
I found all those letters from back then. It’s great I kept them all from the Angel Gear days. They’re from the publisher and your manager, trying to shepherd us together. It was quite interesting. Remember, we had that first meeting and the two of us went up to Woodville?
Woodville . . . Oh yeah?
Did a couple of shows just to see how we got along.
Woodville . . . was that . . . that was with the girl and her . . .
There was a daughter. And a father . . . sort of fierce . . . a fierce father, running a motel and then there she was, quite a comely . . .
Yes, she was quite comely. She was.
And friendly, and you must have said something to her. Some glad-eyeing was going on because I remember you saying something about it to me and me just sort of thinking, Oh yeah, so these are the rules of the road are they?
You said, ‘She’s coming over later and, you know, if she’s got a friend . . . she might have a friend with her, you’d better cope.’ Basically it was ‘Brace yourself’ or something. And I thought, ‘Fuck . . . what have I signed up for here?’
Good old Woodville girl . . .
And they didn’t come over and the father turned up instead, I think. But he was real fierce. He must have overheard something. And he got all defensive as we were leaving the next day.
We drove out past the clothesline and there was a row of nappies on the line. I remember that and thinking, ‘No wonder. A father’s fears.’
But we’d gone off to Woodville to see if we liked each other much.
